Roll-up Car Play Mat is an idea that I had for a toy that:
- would be easy to take anywhere
- hiding in at home among “tons” of other toys would not be a problem
- would encourage creative fun
I think (veeeery subjectively) that I managed to achieve my goal 😉
Roll-up Car Play Mat can easily be packed for any trip/visit: friends, grandparents, holiday, simply anywhere. The fun comes with endless possibilities to play with it. Moreover, when equipped with extra standing plastic road signs it can serve as a tool for teaching a kid some basic traffic rules.
The sewing pattern that I prepared comes along with an easy to follow 19-page tutorial including very detailed instructions (together with photos and lots of schemes).
Roll-up Car Play Mat is quite big (big fun comes along though!), however it almost magically shrinks when rolled-up 😉
- ~140 x 50 cm / 55.1 x 19.7 in unfolded size
- ~ 17 x 50 cm / 6.7 x 19.7 in rolled-up
Materials that you will need to make your own Play Mat include:
- 50 x 140 cm / 19.7 x 55.1 in piece of orange fabric for the back of the Play Mat
- 50 x 20 cm / 19.7 x 7.9 in piece of orange fabric for the sides of the Play Mat
- 50 x 100 cm / 19.7 x 39.4 in piece of car-imprinted blue fabric for the central element
- 2 x (4 cm x 105 cm) / 2 x (1.6 in x 41.3 in of car-imprinted blue fabric for 2 straps to tie the Play Mat
- 68 x 24 cm / 26.8 x 9.5 in piece of brown fabric for the garages and
- 10 x 43 cm / 4 x 17 in for the gas station platform (use fabric that will be hard to wrinkle)
- 11 x 23 cm / 4.4 x 9.1 in piece of beige fabric for the gas station distributors
- 5 x 9 cm / 2 x 3.6 in piece of white fleece or cotton, for displays of the gas station distributors
- 36 x 36 cm / 14.2 x 14.2 in piece of black fabric for roundabout
- Approx. 50 cm (20 in) of 3-4 mm ( 0,15 in) cotton cord for fuel distributors
- Set of 5 small cars (approx. length: 8 cm / 3 in)
- 5 m / 5.47 yd of black polyester bag webbing strap for roads, 4cm wide
- sewing essentials like: pen for tracing pattern and markings on fabric, scissors, threads, pins, standard machine-foot, sewing thread, fabric glue, rotary knife (e.g. OLFA)*, self-healing cutting mat*, long ruler for patchwork* (*not essential, but these tools definitely make preparation for this project a lot easier!), etc.
